Spencerhill is excited to welcome Ciara Smith as the newest member of our agency team. Originally from Illinois, she's called Texas, Scotland and many other locales home while serving in the Navy but now resides in Ohio. Ciara brings her speculative prowess to the agency as a sci-fi, fantasy and horror specialist, though she will also represent romantasy in YA, as well as ancient historical, thrillers and romance. She holds a BA in Creative Writing, hails from a boutique literary agency, and serves as a freelance editor and beta reader. She is disabled, ND, and LGBTQIA+, and strives to bring characters to the page who she never saw in the books she loved growing up. Above all, Ciara is a champion for underrepresented voices, especially neurodivergent and disabled like herself. “I can't wait
to partner with authors across all sorts of genres and bring more diversity to publishing and readers," she said. "My personal mantra is to kick down the gates of publishing for underrepresented authors."
After reading this text on the Spencerhill website, I am genuinely impressed by the agency's approach to diversity and inclusivity. It is very nice to see that they openly support new agents with their own unique stories and experiences, such as Ciara Smith. Her journey from serving in the Navy to a career in literature is inspiring — especially how she uses her background to promote voices that are rarely heard in books. This openness and sincerity in representing people with different experiences is exactly what the publishing industry needs right now.
